The idea of aging is often at the forefront of my awareness. Not only my own progression along life’s timeline, but that of my family, parents, friends and other influential people. Scars, bumps, bruises, and exposure to the elements begin to accumulate and become part of our aesthetic and are a fundamental part of our personalities. It reminds me of the Japanese philosophy Wabi-Sabi, the concept of finding beauty in imperfection. Imbalance, decay, impermanence, mistakes, and the incomplete all form our reality. When I observe natural patinas around me I can’t help but draw a comparison to the interest and beauty of rusted, decaying, and neglected objects and that of the human aging process. The following images were created from found objects showing signs of age, damage, weather, neglect, etc.
